Samsung
introduce their new handset – the A800 – another
slim and stylish flip-phone within a silver
and chrome casing featuring enhanced messaging
allowing you to download, send and received
bitmapped images and polyphonic ringtones
using WAP.
The A800 is a dual-band,
small and sleek handset featuring organiser,
alarm clock,
dual LCD display, 16-bit polyphonic ringtones,
flashing coloured signal indicator, stopwatch,
three games, vibrate alert and currency
converter with a dynamic memory that allocates
memory according to your needs. Navigation
of the handset is by a four-way rocker
and two ‘soft keys’.
This latest edition to
the Samsung collection is smaller than
the T100, resulting in
a smaller and compact keypad – which
could be a disadvantage if texting - and
the blue backlight of the A800’s
greyscale screen is disappointing compared
to the T100 and V200’s full colour
screen. The new handset - unlike the A300
and the V200 – doesn’t feature
an infrared modem either which could be
used to link up to a PDA or laptop
It’s phonebook will save up to 2,000
entries with up to five numbers, emails
as well as Web addresses and the 1.2.1
WAP browser still store seven WAP profiles
along with 30 WAP bookmarks. The handset
will display up to six lines of text, although
a message reveals only four lines at any
time, with the remaining two lines displaying
the date and time the message was sent.
The A800 gives you the option to choose
one of the 10 pre-loaded ringing tones
as your text message alert, link callers
to individual ringtones from a choice of
16 fixed polyphonic ringing tones. There’s
also the option to personalise your phone
by using one of the 12 pre-installed images
in the handset as a background with the
facility to download more via WAP – up
to a maximum of 30 images in the handset.
Samsung describe the A800’s memory
as ‘dynamic’, which means it
is shared for storage of text messages,
EMS images, ringtones and the phonebook.
The three pre-installed games – Fortress,
X-Fighter and Space War - are similar to
the early ‘80’s arcade games
but unfortunately the handset doesn’t
allow you to download any more new games,
which is a shame for the avid gamer!
